Gamut Theater, Harrisburg PA – Structural Remediation

As part of the theater’s renovation an elevator was to be constructed between the 130-year-old steel columns that support a portion of the two floors above. The construction of the elevator pit required this section of the building to be suspended to excavate the basement floor and pour column piers and the elevator pit. Each column was supported with two 21 ft long x 18” tall channels weighing 58 pounds per foot. The channels were anchored to the concrete wall and bolted to the columns. Then everything was, lightly jacked and blocked up while new column base plates were added and the excavation and concrete were poured. All of the steel was inserted and extracted from the building through the 3ft wide alley window above the pit. The channels and cross bracing were added to the two columns seen below.
